Effective October 26, 2004, Travelers from Visa Waiver Program Countries Must Present Either a Machine Readable Passport or a Valid U.S. Visa

Visa waiver travelers from all 27 Visa Waiver Program Countries must present either a machine readable passport or a valid U.S. visa. This new requirement comes into effect on October 26, 2004. Travelers with a valid U.S. visa will not be required to have machine?readable passports. A traveler using a non-machine-readable passport, even if from a Visa Waiver Program country, will have to apply for a non-immigrant visa at the U.S. Embassy in La Paz according to the process outlined on our webpage. The first step is for the applicant to contact any DHL office in Bolivia to arrange for an appointment. DHL will give the applicant an interview date, at which point he or she will come to the Embassy in La Paz to apply.

Furthermore, as of October 26, 2005, Visa waiver travelers from all 27 Visa Waiver Program Countries must present biometrically enabled, machine-readable passports.

In addition, as of September 30, 2004, all VWP travelers arriving at a U.S. port of entry will be required to enroll in US-VISIT, a program involving a digital photograph and fingerscans.
