Information for U.S. Citizen Residents Interested in Employment
at the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia

There are several ways to enter U.S. Government service with the Department of State. The most common method is by taking the Foreign Service Written Exam which is usually offered every year in the United States and in each U.S. Embassy worldwide. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 20 years and no more than 59 years of age on the day of the examination, and available for assignments worldwide. For more information, visit:

http://www.careers.state.gov

The Department of State is made up of Foreign Service Officers and Specialists as well as Civil Service personnel. Specialists include: information management specialists, physicians, nurse practitioners, and office management specialists just to name a few. Candidates for entry level Civil Service positions should have either three years of general work experience or at least a bachelor's degree.

All U.S. Government Agencies

U.S. Citizens who are residents in Bolivia may apply for vacant positions advertised by any U.S. Government agency in Bolivia. There is always competition for positions with no guarantee that you will be selected. It is more difficult for a U.S. citizen to compete and win a position overseas because there is usually the requirement to speak the foreign language and because Eligible Family Members of U.S. direct-hire or U.S. personal services contract employees (assigned from the United States) have preference over U.S. Citizen candidates outside the mission.

If you are a U.S. citizen resident in Bolivia and are eligible for appointment under Bolivian government laws and regulations, you are welcome to apply for vacancies that may become available at the U.S. Embassy. Personnel notices of vacancies are posted on a bulletin board at the main door of the Embassy. If you are interested in applying for any of them, you just have to request a copy of the announcement from reception and send us a letter of interest together with a copy of your SF-171 (Application for Federal Employment), or OF-612 (Optional Application for Federal Employment).
